Remodeling your kitchen is a great way to give one of the most important rooms in your home a face lift and perhaps make it more user friendly.
The first step in the kitchen remodeling process is to determine what you want to do with your current kitchen. If you are considering a major overhaul then you will probably need to replace appliances and kitchen furniture such as countertops, cabinets, and you might have to get new flooring.
Next, determine how much you want to allot for the budget. Then ask yourself: “Will I do the work or hire a contractor?” Of course, if you feel you can do the renovation you will save a considerable amount of money; however, if you think a professional would do a better job, then invest in the expense of a contractor. You want your new kitchen to be first class but this is not the are to get cheap with.
If you are replacing your kitchen appliances you must first decide if you want to stay with traditional white appliances or switch to stainless steel. Of course, stainless steel is more expensive than traditional choices but it does provide a clean, elegant look to your new kitchen.
Countertops are available in a wide variety of materials from stainless steel to laminate. If you are operating on a tight budget laminate will do the trick; however, it is easily damaged. On the high end of the spectrum are stainless steel countertops. Generally, 16 gauge stainless steel is used in kitchens. It will definitely give your kitchen a contemporary look. The down side of stainless steel is it is high in price and is high maintenance.
If you need new cabinets for your kitchen then be aware they fall into three categories: custom, semi-custom and stock.
Custom cabinets
Expect to pay top dollar for these cabinets, but you have a wide range of styles and materials from which to choose.
Semi-custom cabinets
These are mass produced, but you can make basic changes to size and finishes when ordering.
Stock cabinets
These are also mass produced and can’t be modified. They are easy to install and much more economically priced.
If you need more work space in your kitchen, the fastest and cheapest thing to do is purchase an island, butcher block, utility cart or separate stainless steel work table. These are great since they are portable and can be moved around in your kitchen for different tasks.
Your new kitchen wouldn’t be complete without a new floor. There are many options of flooring materials on today’s market. They include vinyl, tile, laminate, linoleum or wood. This is just a personal choice. Of course, if you are concerned about maintenance, vinyl is easy to keep clean with a damp mop.
The simplest way to get updated lighting in your kitchen is to replace your old bulbs with fluorescent ones. They give your room a fresh, bright look instantly.
Finally, just keep in mind your budget, how you want your fitted kitchens design to look and who is going to do the work.
Your new kitchen will be a room where your whole family will gather and enjoy a wonderful meal.
